STORY STUDY - MEDIUM: FILM “The Aviator”
He was one of the biggest names in film and aviation history.
Directed by Martin Scorsese, and written by John Logan, The Aviator is the story of Howard Hughes, film producer and an aviation magnate, always perfecting planes for a wide variety of uses.
The film also deals with the love lives of various actresses, and his struggle with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
The film focuses on a twenty year window of Hughes life, and there are so many plots/greatest hits of life to hit. Luckily, they all seem to be showcased one after the other, never intertwining.
The long, 170 minute run time might look intimidating, but what really makes it a breeze to look at is the production design and, of course, the acting.
I was vaguely aware of the film when I saw that Cate Blanchett won for her performance as Katherine Hepburn, who is one of, if not, the standout in the film. Finally, when it was showing on TV, I finally got a chance to watch it.
A lot of the world, especially the aviation portion, was very confusing because I didn’t know the terminology and the politics related to it. What I did understand is what the characters wanted, and what it means to them if something didn’t go the way they wanted it to. I think that’s what makes the film more accessible for people whose knowledge and familiarity don’t match with what the film is talking about.
The Aviator is an American epic about a man whose flaws don’t define him, and even he even defied them. He didn’t play by the rules, and he made the world for the better because of it.
