STORY STUDY - MEDIUM: THEATER - “My First Time”
Sex can either be a casual or a taboo subject to talk about. Whether the experience was amazing or just terrible, sometimes you just want to tell someone about it. This is the age of the internet, and with the power of anonymity, there is no limit.
Written by Ken Davenport (and People Just Like You), My First Time is about the stories written on the website www.MyFirstTime.com created by Peter Foldy & Craig Stuart.
The play doesn’t have a traditional narrative. It features four actors, two male and two female, reading stories straight from the website either verbatim or speaking as if they are the actual person in the story. The show itself begins by showing statistics based on a survey the audience fills out when they enter the theater.
It also takes the time to be informative about sex, such as stating the average age of a person’s age of their first sexual experience based on their country, a particular religion’s relation to the subject of sex, down to the definition of the word “virgin” according to Dictionary.com and UrbanDictionary.com.
The stories range from funny, to sweet, to uncomfortable, to tragic.
I get the feeling that part of what makes the show is the actors performing on stage, but I have never seen the show. In fact, I was completely unaware of the play and the website until I saw the script in the store.
I haven’t taken the time to find the stories in the script to see if they are from the website, but the way these stories are written are vivid and clearly descriptive that leave very much to the imagination.
What else is there to say?
Check it out. (Yeah... I don't want to make a pun here.)
