BONUS STORY STUDY - MEDIUM: NOVEL - "Court of Fives" and "Poisoned Blade"

We've got a bonus Story Study, and it's a rule-breaker because today will be about a couple of books.

One of my freebies from the San Diego Comic Con exhibit hall were a few novels, some of which were advance reader copies. While I'm not a book reviewer, I still want to discuss them, especially since they've yet to be released.

Today's topic will be about Court of Fives and it's second volume, Poisoned Blade, written by Kate Elliot.

Please bear with me, as I've never read (nor was I given) the first book, so I don't know exactly what happened at the end, but since this is about raising awareness of this series, I'll limit my post to just that with quick synopses of each book.

Court of Fives is a young-adult, high fantasy story set in the land of Efea, where it is divided into the high-profile Patrons and the lowly Commoners. The story is a first person narrative, told by protagonist Jessamy, the daughter of a Patron army captain and a Commoner Mother. She wants to compete in the Fives, a physically and mentally challenging obstacle race. However, her father forbids it for various reasons, so she has to compete wearing a mask. Here, she meets and starts a romance with Kalliarkos, a Patron competitor who is also a prince.

Poisoned Blade, like with most second books, takes the world and throws it into complete turmoil. Jessamy moves up in the ranks of the Fives, but she has a secret. It seems by the end of the Court of Fives, Kalliarkos' uncle, Lord Gargaron, ordered the murder of Jessamy's family, and he believes he has succeeded. However, Jessamy has kept them hidden somewhere in town. Suddenly, the Fives competition is not as important by the end because Efea is now on the verge of revolution, and the Patron royalty of Efea... well, let's just say it really becomes like Game of Thrones, what with all the betrayal that's happening within the royal family. And yes, they are shocking deaths that happen in this volume.

And that's pretty much the gist of it.

Poisoned Blade ends with a cliffhanger (of course), and I am curious to see how the story plays out.

Court of Fives has already been released, while Poisoned Blade will be released on August 16th, 2016

Defy them all, and check them out.
